Damon Metal Braces
Are A Popular Choice
Gullotta Orthodontics is one of the Gold Coasts most reputable Metal Braces
orthodontists. Dr Gullotta has over 35 years of metal braces experience.
What are metal braces?
Metal braces (such as Damon) offer a successful result and are an excellent course of treatment among all demographics, including children, teenagers and adults, to straighten crooked teeth.
Dr Nino Gullotta believes the Damon system of braces is different to others because it uses ‘passive self-ligating braces’, which means they remove the need for rubber bands around the braces.
This spells good news for patients because there is less friction, a shorter treatment time and an improved level of comfort.
What are the benefits of Metal Braces?
Metal Braces are also excellent for the widening of dental arches, which means the need for expanders and extractions is greatly reduced.
Having straight teeth and proper jaw alignment can offer many more benefits than just aesthetic appeal, including proper chewing function. Straight teeth are also easier to clean and maintain, decreasing the chance of gum disease and tooth decay.
Dr Nino Gullotta designs more than just a new smile, which is his patients’ main priority. He also helps enhance self-esteem and corrects the underlying dental problem, giving you healthier teeth, mouth and gums to improve your quality of life.

Metal Braces F.A.Q.
Putting your braces on isn’t painful. Once the teeth start moving, you can feel some discomfort as your teeth are moving towards their new positions. Any discomfort during orthodontic treatment can usually be controlled with normal pain relief medication like panadol.
Appointments are scheduled according to each patient’s needs. Most patients in braces will be seen every six to ten weeks.
Treatment times will vary but typical takes 18 to 24 months.
Yes. If you are playing a contact sport, you will need a mouthguard fitted over your braces.
When you first have your braces fitted, you may notice a slight change in the way you speak like a slight lisp. Once your tongue and lips get used to your braces, you will adjust and your speech should return to normal after a few weeks.
Hard, sticky, crunchy foods should be avoided because they can knock braces off the teeth. In addition, sugar intake should be reduced to minimize the risk of decay around the braces. Foods which should be avoided include:
- Minties and Toffee
- Caramels such as fantales
- Corn chips
- French bread sticks, bread crusts or hard rolls
- Whole apples or carrots (cut them into pieces first)
- Corn on the cob (cut the corn off the cob before eating)
