Everything can be done without leaving your house these days, even Orthodontic treatment apparently! We have seen that some companies are now offering DIY teeth straightening where a patient receives the materials to make a mould of their teeth, sends it back to the company and then receives a treatment plan of clear aligners that is meant to result in a perfect smile. Now, in theory this sounds awesome, however there are definitely some major risks involved that we would like to bring to the surface.
No Professional Supervision
This is a huge one. Firstly, you might think that taking an impression/mould of your teeth is a piece of cake, however taking one correctly actually requires a lot of skill. Our clinic staff have taken thousands of impressions over the years, and sometimes they retake an impression two or three times to make sure that is is perfect. Imagine sending a bad impression back to the DIY company (while not knowing) and receiving a set of clear aligners that either don’t fit your teeth properly, or don’t move them the way you thought. Pretty disappointing, don’t you think? There’s also the risk that without supervision from an Orthodontist, you could end up damaging the roots of your teeth, forcing your gum line to recede, or even loosening your teeth. That’s a scary thought and definitely a risk that we wouldn’t want you to take!
Here at Gullotta Orthodontics, we have state of the art equipment that allows you to see an accurate simulation of what your teeth will look like at the end of Invisalign treatment. Unfortunately with DIY mail order teeth straightening, you have no idea where the aligners are moving your teeth and what they will look like in the end. We also use small attachments that clip into the Invisalign aligners to help the teeth move where we need them to. You don’t receive these when ordering DIY aligners, as they require application from a professional. This means your teeth aren’t moving as accurately and the DIY aligners may struggle to move difficulty placed teeth.
Potential Huge Expenses
Mail order teeth straightening companies advertise their aligners as being very affordable compared to Invisalign issued through an Orthodontist. Some sites even offer a money back guarantee if the aligners don’t work for you. This seems pretty fair, however in the case that the aligners damage the roots of your teeth or your gums, you’re looking at figures a lot higher than your average Orthodontics bill. Damage could end up costing you thousands to repair! We don’t know about you, but we would much rather have the job done properly the first time with no damage repair expenses.
