Welcome - Your Smile Journey Starts Here

We know visiting an orthodontist for the first time can feel a little nerve-wracking, whether you’re bringing your child in for their very first check-up or you’re starting treatment as an adult. That’s why we’ve designed the first visit at Gullotta Orthodontics to be relaxed, informative, and completely pressure-free.

What to Expect Step by Step

1. A Warm Welcome
From the moment you walk through the door, our friendly front-desk team will make you feel at home. We’ll help you with any quick forms, confirm a few details, and then guide you to one of our comfortable consultation rooms.

2. Comprehensive Smile Assessment
Your first visit is all about getting to know you (and your smile). We’ll start with:

  • Photos and digital scans of your teeth and bite
  • X-rays (if needed) to check jaw growth, tooth position, and bone structure
  • A thorough orthodontic examination by Dr. Nino Gullotta

These records are included as part of your complimentary consultation, so there’s no cost for this initial visit.

3. Personalised Treatment Discussion
Once we’ve gathered all the information, Dr. Gullotta will sit down with you to discuss:

  • What’s happening with the teeth and bite
  • Whether treatment is needed now, later, or at all
  • The best treatment options for your situation
  • How long treatment is likely to take
  • Costs, payment plans, and next steps

We’ll always explain everything in simple, easy-to-understand language — and we encourage you to ask as many questions as you like.

If You’re an Adult Starting Treatment

It’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted. In fact, more than 30% of our patients are adults!

At your first visit, we’ll talk about what’s most important to you — whether that’s discreet treatment options like clear aligners, improving your bite and function, or simply boosting your confidence.

We’ll show you all the available options and help you choose a plan that fits your lifestyle, budget, and goals.

If You’re a Parent Bringing Your Child

It’s completely normal for parents to feel unsure about when to see an orthodontist. We often recommend a first check-up around age 7–8, but we see kids younger and older all the time.

During your child’s first visit, we’ll look for things like:

  • Jaw growth and spacing issues
  • Early bite problems (like crossbites or overbites)
  • Baby teeth that are not falling out on time
  • Habits like thumb-sucking that may affect development

Sometimes we’ll recommend starting treatment early to guide growth. Other times, we may simply monitor development and see your child again in 6–12 months. Either way, you’ll leave with a clear plan.

Why Families Love Our First Visit

  • Completely complimentary – including all records and a full treatment plan.
  • Whole-health approach – we look beyond teeth to consider airway, breathing, and facial growth.
  • Clear roadmap – you’ll leave with a detailed plan and timeline.
  • Supportive team – we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Orthodontics FAQs

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosing, preventing and treating problems in the alignment of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment involves using braces, clear aligners plates, and other corrective devices to move teeth and jaws into normal alignment. It may involve changing the position of the teeth or modifying the way the jaw grows.

An orthodontist is a dentist who has undertaken an additional two or three years of full-time study and clinical training at university (usually a Masters degree) so they can specialise in orthodontics. This extra study is on top of the five years spent training as a general dentist. Orthodontists are the most qualified to diagnose, prevent and treat problems you may have in the alignment of your teeth and jaws.

No, a referral is not necessary to see a specialist orthodontist like Dr Gullotta. You should, however, have a general dental check-up before you start any orthodontic treatment. This is because there may be some dental problems eg dental decay or gum disease that may need to be addressed before orthodontic treatment can begin.

Dr Nino Gullotta is a leading Gold Coast Orthodontist with over 35 years of specialist experience. Over this time has delighted thousands of patients with exceptional orthodontic care. Dr Gullotta is also rated as one of the top 3 orthodontists on the Gold Coast according to threebestrated.com.au.

There is an unmetered 2P section out the very front of the building, however there are limited spaces. All other parking is 2P metered.

Orthodontic treatment is optimally initiated during adolescence (ideally between age 10 and 14) when growth spurts aid in addressing tooth and jaw alignment. In some cases, early intervention, starting around age 7, allows orthodontists to detect and treat issues before they become complex. Have a look at how to set your child up for their future and our Blog When Should a Child See an Orthodontist.

Nonetheless, the advantages of orthodontic treatment are not limited to adolescence. Many adults pursue orthodontic care for both dental health and aesthetics, emphasising that it’s never too late to improve one’s smile. Orthodontic treatment offers several benefits for children, including:

  • Improved oral health: Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of dental issues like cavities and gum disease.
  • Enhanced self-esteem: A straight, attractive smile can boost one’s self-confidence and overall well-being.
  • Better speech and chewing function: Orthodontic treatment can improve speech and make it easier to bite and chew food.
  • Correction of bite issues: Orthodontics can address overbites, underbites, and crossbites, which can impact jaw function and facial symmetry.
  • How Small Alignment Issues can have a Major Impact on Dental Health

There are various orthodontic treatment options available for children, including:

  • Traditional braces : These are the most common type of orthodontic treatment. They consist of metal brackets and wires that gradually move teeth into the desired position.
  • Invisalign and clear aligners : These are transparent, removable aligners that are less noticeable than traditional braces and often preferred by older children or teenagers.
  • Functional appliances: These devices are used to correct issues with the jaw and bite. They can be removable or fixed.
  • Palatal expanders: These are used to widen the upper jaw in cases of crowding or bite issues.

The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed. In general, treatment can last anywhere from several months to a few years. The orthodontist will provide a more accurate estimate after assessing your child’s specific case. The treatment process typically involves regular appointments to adjust braces, aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. These appointments ensure that the teeth are moving as planned and that the treatment is progressing effectively. It’s important to follow the orthodontist’s recommendations and maintain good oral hygiene to help expedite the treatment process.
