Damon braces are revolutionary.
Braces come in various forms, but the Damon system is a whole new way of providing orthodontic treatment. They can often help move teeth more quickly, are more comfortable and typically require fewer adjustments.
Here’s why we use Damon braces at Gullotta Orthodontics.
What Are Damon Braces?
Damon braces, like traditional braces, combine metal or ceramic brackets with a wire that moves the teeth. However, Damon braces use a slide mechanism to hold the wire, rather than relying on adjustments of individual wires at each treatment visit.
The wire is light and has a “shape memory” to hold it in the right position until the next adjustment. The Damon system doesn’t require elastics.
Traditional braces are tied in with elastics and this can cause friction and pressure, and make treatment less comfortable. The Damon system allows teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably.
Traditional vs. Damon Braces
Traditional braces may require the removal of one or more healthy teeth to allow room repositioning the remaining teeth. The wires press against the teeth, and the combination of brackets, wires and rubber bands make it harder to keep your teeth clean.
Damon brackets are smaller, there are no rubber bands, and the wire presses against the brackets, not the teeth. This combination means Damon braces are less visible and oral hygiene is easier.
Because the wire is set to tighten slowly over time, many patients report less discomfort with Damon braces than traditional braces.
In some cases, Damon braces can shorten treatment time. Studies have shown that treatment time may as much as six months shorter in some patients and that patients may need only half as many appointments.
Fewer appointments are required as the self-litigating wire does not need to be adjusted as often as those in traditional braces. However, the treatment time is dependent on many other factors, such as the severity of the original problem and the individual patient response.
Damon braces take aesthetics seriously and they’re designed to be discreet and easy to keep clean. The brackets are smaller so it’s easier to clean your teeth between dental hygiene visits because there are no elastic ties.
Damon also has the option of clear brackets, making them almost invisible.
Compared to Invisalign you’re less likely to experience speech difficulty, you don’t have to remove them before eating, and they produce excellent results. They’re also virtually invisible, and because they’re not removable, they’re working 24 hours a day.
